Research Program for Medical Students (RPMS) at USC SOM:
This program provides research opportunities to USC medical students during the summer following their first year. This is a seven-week, research experience provided by both clinical and basic science faculty which constitutes an important element of a well-rounded medical education. The students will learn how basic research can be translated from bench-to-bedside or vice versa. This program will accept a select group of rising second-year medical students to participate in this program annually. Funding will be provided by the Dean's Office. The RPMS has the following components:
- The selected students will participate in a research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor. The students select the mentor from a list of faculty willing to participate in this program. The research experience can include laboratory, clinical, epidemiological, or theoretical projects. The program provides an opportunity for students to get involved in a research project to which they can make a positive contribution.
- The selected students will receive a stipend of $2500 for the 7 week period of training from the Dean’s office. The faculty mentors are required to provide the supplies and materials needed for the research project.
- About the midway of the program, there will be an informal breakfast meeting with other students organized by the Associate Dean for Basic Science, Associate Dean for Education and the mentoring faculty. During this meeting, the students will discuss the projects that they are working on among their peers.
- The students will be encouraged to attend departmental or School of Medicine seminars over the course of the summer.
- Students must attend a lecture on Responsible Conduct of Research, which will be offered once during the summer.
- Students are required to submit a scientific report of their work which will enable them to formulate their thoughts and bring the work to completion.
- Also, the students will present their research to faculty and graduate students during the weekly graduate student seminar series in Fall.
- Students will be encouraged to present their research at the USC Graduate symposium
